Here are the replies:
Dear Judy and Helen,
I hope you and the sisters from the Alpha Chapter N.J. are safe and healthy.
Thank you so much for contacting me. I am fine, I am in Australia. I have managed to retain the same marks in my studies. I have had full online engagement with my student cohort and the wonderful Faculty from the Kroc School in San Diego. We made the transition to online very well and last night I was able to watch some of my friends from second year graduate online. I love my studies and it has bought me a lot of peace and joy.
In Australia I have been basically studying and learning about how my Mother's garden grows. We have a wonderful time cooking and planning our relaxed quiet days. Australia is just coming out of lockdown now, but they are still discouraging public gatherings. Restaurants are not allowed anymore than 10 people and there are strict regulations in line.
I wish I was still in California, but my family had anxiety around the international flights being canceled and me not being in the same country. I may need to complete the fall in Australia as there are no international flights yet. I will definitely be back in the spring though, even if I have to swim!
Please pass my love on to all the sisters from Alpha Chapter N.J. and thank you so much for the wonderful thoughtful cards. I will be sure to bring some Australian cards to post to everyone when I return.
The support and friendship offered by Delta Kappa Gamma has been overwhelming and a significant part of my educational experience in the USA.
I look forward to reconnecting and hopefully meeting more of you in person when I return,
Lots of love,
Ange
Thank you for the email :) I'm so glad to see this today!
Yes, i'm doing good, infact, surprisingly, I'm more productive during this quarantine time!! :) My supervisor sent all the equipment home so I'm doing my research full time from home, trying to stay away from news and corona's anxiety! :D For the spring semester, I got alphas in both the subjects so I'm super happy :)
I hope you are faring well too. Much love and prayers!! Take care.
Regards
Narmeen

Thank you! Fortunately all is well here and I've been able to continue my studies online. This is my exams week so the last one of the semester. I'm eagerly waiting for the break, since it has been a tough semester!
Thank you for checking!
Best,
Magalí

HI,
Thanks for the email. I have been continuing my studies yes, and right now working on my thesis. I am doing good so far. Thanks for checking.

Dear  Judy Jaeger, Helen Allen   and Delta Kappa Gamma sisters, Alpha Chapter N.J.
Thank you for your email.
I am glad you are doing well. We are experiencing a historic event with no precedents. This pandemic is affecting our lives but should not affect our spirits. I am sure that it will take time but we will overcome it. We need to stay strong and safe.
I am doing good, taking care of myself, staying home almost all of the time, and safe.
I finished my classes online and I officially graduated on Sunday!! I am so happy!! It was an online commencement but hopefully we will have a normal commencement ceremony in December.
I did an internship at the Inter American Development Bank and they offered me a contract to continue for six months so I am very happy about that. I am very proud to contribute to the sustainable development of the region applying the knowledge gained in the Masters.
Thank you all for your support. I cherish your friendship and have DKG in my heart. I am forever grateful with you and please let´s keep in touch. I really appreciate your love and work with this wonderful organization.
Take care and stay healthy and safe.
Warm regards
Maria Elisa

Thank you for your email. I hope you and your families are doing alright during this strange time. I had to come back to South Korea to be with my family. I am watching the situation closely and preparing my permanent residency in Canada so that I can have my healthcare coverage for when I return.
I have been finding it difficult to stay focused to be honest, but I have had great support from my supervisors who are helping me find structure in my daily schedules.
 Thank you,
Jihyun

Yes I’m doing well and the semester is going good too. I hope life is treating you well too :)
I can't tell you how glad I’m to see your email. The DKG family is wonderful. The stop by emails and congratulatory letters make me feel so blessed and happy.
I was in San Diego for a week and just returned back and checked email. I applied for student travel grant for NDSS, one of the top cyber security conferences of the world, and fortunately was sponsored by Internet Society to attend the conference. :) I’m glad that US organizations are supporting cybersecurity education for women.
I literally want to take a moment out to thank you for the sponsorship and all the posts/ letters that give me confidence and motivation to do even better in phd. I’m indebted.

Narmeen

Dear Judy and Helen,
Thank you for your email. Since becoming the recipient of the DKG world fellowship, I have received an overwhelming amount of love, support, and encouragement from DKG sisters. It is truly wonderful to be part of such a warm community! My semester is going very well. I have been able to submit few papers for publication and been able to advance quite a lot with my data collection efforts. There is a lot to learn and a lot to digest, but I am very fascinate by my research topic (law enforcement oversight).

I hope all is going well with you, and hopefully our paths cross sometime near future!

Warmest regards,
Jihyun Kwon

All About World Fellowship!

This July I attended the DKG International Convention in Austin,TX.  It was an enlightening event, but I'll tell you more about that later.  Right now, here is what I found out at a workshop on the World Fellowship Program of DKG.
You can download the flyer DKG provides>
History:
  • Scholarship Program for Non-DKG members outside the US and Canada
  • Program initiated in 1946 and 4 German women studied for 8 weeks in Sweden in 1948
  • 1952 World Fellowship formed an alliance with UNESCO
  • 1958-1960 was the beginning of the present program, which requires that the recipient be pursuing a Masters or Doctorate in her chosen field and be a Fulbright scholar
  • In 1960 the award was $2500
  • 1972 World Fellowship became a Standing Committee of DKG
  • Since 1960, $9.3 million in awards have been given to 963 women representing 122 countries.
  • World Fellowship gets all of its funds from chapter, state, and individual donations.  No funding comes from the DKG budget
  • We don’t get names for WF until October because the women chosen must first be accepted as Fulbright Scholars at a University in the US or Canada and then they must get to the program and begin their studies before we make the award!  Sometimes the women that we want to choose don’t make it to their programs for personal or financial or visa requirement reasons.
World Fellowship has entries on the DKG Blog – after sign-in http://dkgsi.blogspot.com/search/label/World%20Fellowship%20Committee
You can read the stories of some of these remarkable women.
The recipients are found at dkg.org ->Tools -> Chapter Tools -> World Fellowship.
Picture
Sigrun Klara Hannesdottir, Ph.D, from Iceland was the next speaker.
  • 1967 World Fellowship Scholar, studied at Wayne State University during 1987-68
  • Received permission to remain in the US for a year to work in Michigan (usually the scholars must leace the US as soon as their program is completed
  • Joined the Peace Corps o work in Peru for the Bank of International Development.  While she was there and earthquake devastated the economy of Peru.
  • In 1975 DKG came to Iceland and Sigrun was the initial contact person.
  • She was Regional Director for Europe 2002-2004
  • Received the European Achievement Award in 2009
  • Received the DKG International Achievement Award in 2013
  • She has been a professor of library science, the Director of NORDINFO and was the first woman to serve as national librarian.  Wayne State gave her the Distinguished Alumni award in 2009.
  • In 2003 she received the Order of the Falcon for contributions to Library Science in Iceland.
  • And more!

Replies:
Dear Judy Jaeger, Helen Allen and Cheryl Stafford,
Thank you so much for this email! I just finished this first year finals last week, attached you may find a picture of that happy moment at Harvard Kennedy School.
This second semester has been intense and full of new experiences and learning. The highlight of it has been taking new challenging classes and getting to know better my classmates and professors. But also other things have been super enriching, like closing the year having organized plenty of talks and activities as part of the leading team of the Argentine Society at HKS (photo attached), being recognized by my peers for being Academic Coordinator of the class the whole year, being editor of the Latin American Policy Journal which was released last month, etc. While winter was harsh, I already have my "uniform" to support it, it provided me the opportunity of going skiing nearby for the first time (photo attached), and not even the cold stopped me from biking everywhere. Its a shame I am leaving now that the weather is nice, but new adventures are to come in Sri Lanka, where I will do my summer internship in the government there for 10 weeks.
Regarding more adminsitrative matters, I wanted to ask if you could send me the confirmation letter of the $500 award for next academic year.
Also, feel free to share the photos with the rest of the DKG community.
Finally, please let me know if there happens to be a DKG meeting at Cambridge/Boston some time soon, would love to meet some of the fellows in person.
Thanks a lot for all the support ou and all DKG has given me and I hope you have a great summer and new academic year!
Best,
Malena Acuña
Dear Judy, Helen, and the rest of the DKG community,
Thank you so much for keeping me in your thoughts! I am so grateful for the encouragement I continue to receive from you all. I am set to graduate on May 15th, and could not have done it without all the support from DKG.
Thank you again for everything. I hope to make you all proud as I begin a new chapter serving the education sector in my home country, the Philippines.
Sincerely,
Anna Alejo
Dear Ms Judy Jaeger, Ms Helen Allen, Ms Myrna Santos
I would like to thank you so much for supporting me during my Master of Public Health Program. I am extending my most sincere thanks for the fellowship you provided me for two years.
Your support was extremely helpful and was paramount to my academic and professional success at the University of South Florida. It allowed me to dedicate sufficient time to my studies and research thereby excelling academically and professionally. I am graduating with a 3.86 GPA, experience in working in research with three professors, winning two research awards, two leadership awards and representing my school in committee and leadership groups.
I was fortunate enough to be mentored by Ms. Myrna Santos, who invited me to the regional convention and was morally supportive. She was one of my strongest social support, who helped me to remain encouraged and motivated. She created opportunities for me to share my experience in the U.S with more than 100 DKG women.
Please receive my sincere gratitude for the support you provided me as well as your contribution to support women educators globally.
Gratefully,
Marlene Joannie Bewa
Thank you very much, Judy.
