Dear Alpha Sisters,
It is spring and May is coming soon. Our meeting on Thursday, May 2, 2019 shouldn’t have any problem with snow. I was so sorry to have to cancel the March meeting! We’ll have to build a Plan B into our winter meetings.
It was good to see some of you at the New Jersey State Organization Convention last weekend. Theresa and Megan were certainly hostesses with the mostessess. We welcomed our two inductees, Jennifer Skomial and Denise Tighe, to our chapter. Theresa and Laura managed to be winners at the basket auction. Debbie Hoeflinger was our Key Award Recipient. Congratulations, all of you!
I hope you will be able to join us at the meeting at Cedar Grove High School on May 2. At that meeting Patti Caruso will be introducing our Grant-in-Aid recipient for this year. Our state president, Carol Schwartz, has been invited to come share the meeting with us.
The program that we have planned is Empowering Women Educators. With that in mind, we have invited as many of our recent past Grant-in-Aid recipients as we could find to come and bring a friend so that we can meet them as peers and possible members. While our chapter is too spread out to do and Early Educators’ project similar to the ones that bring welcome baskets to all the new hires in a district, we might be able to work on supporting our Grant-in-Aid recipients as they make their way into the profession. We definitely have one young lady coming, Gabrielle San Roman, the 2012 recipient, who is teaching music in Verona. This program is less a presentation and more an opportunity to explore possibilities. After all, DKG was formed to support women educators, and our newest teachers are most vulnerable these days.
Our service project is the one we couldn’t carry through in March. Learning to love reading at a young age is very important. To encourage that love of reading we are adopting a 5th grade class in one of Paterson’s elementary schools. Their teacher tells us that many of the students have no books of their own. We hope to provide each of the 24 students with a new or gently used book. The books should be on the 3rd, 4th or 5th grade reading level. Please bring a book with you to the May meeting.
Please also remember that your dues for 2020 are due by the end of May, $75. You can bring your check to the meeting, mail it to Cathy Cleenput, or use the button on our website to pay online.
